Resumes, cover Letters, letters of intent…

I posted on Facebook that I help job applicants with their resumes and cover letters. An employer friend of mine responded to the post, “They need it too. Some of the resumes I’ve gotten over the years are a hoot.”

A general consensus amongst employers is that even college grads don’t have the necessary writing skills to impress potential employers. Well, if that’s true, my first suggestion is that you take some more classes that REALLY teach you how to write. In the meantime, I am here to help.

Consider the application, resume, cover letter, letter or intent like an introduction at a party. You meet someone for the first time, maybe even someone you’re quite interested in, and you want to put your best foot forward. Now, there are some common issues that must be addressed regarding format and content, but in general there has to be something that springs from the cover letter that really catches the readers attention. In addition, it would be great if you knew something about the current state of the education nation (what colleges and schools aren’t providing, missing) and what employers are looking for. That’s where I come in.

I have worked in five different fields, taught at the college / university level for the last ten years, and have done extensive research on the economy, current dominant money system, the workings of capitalism, what employers are risking and really looking for and so forth. This is priceless knowledge when you’re trying to land a position. However, there’s more.

If you would like, I can just do the writing for you and that’s it. However, because so many are making so many mistakes in choosing the wrong career (5-10 years after graduation 70% no longer working in field related to major), you may want to let me help you brush up on whether or not you are making the right career choice. At this point, you most likely have a degree, so we can’t change that; however, there are choices that you make at this juncture that might lead to much less loss of time and money and a whole lot less pain. But it’s up to you.

Now to the nitty gritty. Pricing.

  • First Draft: research and writing to finished product ready to submit:  $129.95

Keep in mind this involves my extensive background and knowledge that took years to acquire. A major benefit to you. Plus I am an author whose written seven books of fiction and non-fiction, and not just a resume hack. I have taught composition, literature, and technical writing (business writing) over the last ten years. And you’re paying for something that has a much greater chance of actually getting you the job, avoiding what many are doing: going months if not a year or longer with no work. Again, your choice.

  • Additional major re-writes: $40

The initial price includes a minor rewrite. I will ask your approval of the final draft, and if there are minor changes needed, no additional charge. However, for any major re-writes there will be an additional $40 charge. So the point here is that it’s best to get real clear in your mind what you want right off the bat.

  • Pages 3-5: $40

Generally it takes me 1 to 1 1/2 hours to complete a first draft or 1 to 2 pages of copy coming from researching who you are matching that to the questions asked. Most cover letters are a page or two, but if there are applications that require many essays, such as those required for degree applications (bachelor’s, master’s), letters of intent, college program applications (financial aid, scholarships, etc.) then there is an additional charge for pages 3 to 5.
